Comer K80 and S80
Engineering By Tornado Engineers
High frequency shaking,
cryo treatment to below 300 that goes up and down 1 degree a minute
for three days, line boring, friction reduction,
stabilization during break in.... why do we do all these things and
more? Because it is what it takes to make a stock C50 engine better.
But these are K80's why do all that? To build the best C50's in the
world we had to pile into R&D, we took that materials knowledge to
the K80's world, we couldn't just leave it all behind. The other
answer is because you want to go faster, you want to push it harder
and run leaner longer. You want to win.
We are not like the
other builders that blueprint the next motor and ship it out. We
push the envelop after we find a good piece to start with. In the
end all that work pays off because most of the time in the big races
the top 5 are only .07 seconds apart. If we can hold the cylinder
straighter a bit longer at high temps then your driver can pass at
the end of the straight after a long 18 lap race.
We believe that what our
customers want is not the cheapest engine but a really good one
built by an engineer that cares about the finer details inside the
engine. You aren't looking for a machinist that punches out engines
all day, you want someone that sorts through these and knows what to
look for. Comer is making the K80's better now after a bit of
unequal production runs. Now is a good time to upgrade to more
horsepower.
The methods used are
legal for IKF, Stars, WKA and most other groups. It is a combination
of several small details and searching for the motors with the best
potential. No two motors are the same. Two motors can be only ten
serial numbers apart yet .6 horsepower different. The technology to
test our C50 engines has helped the K80 program immensely.
The dyno we utilize is a
5 inch water brake dynamometer for 2 cycle kart engines and helps us
see inside the K80 as the rings seat and the engine develops peek
horsepower. We've been know as the worlds premier Comer C50 builder
and now we have taken that commitment to the K80 program and other
engine packages. With over 400 hours of testing and dyno time slated
for 2008 alone. If you have a K80 and want to see us make it faster
then send it up. If you're a top runner and want to test our K80
against your current engine builder we'll arrange a test. Just
contact the Chief Engineer at (916)390-6474.
We supply K80 and S80
engines to countries all over the world including Australia and
Venezuela. Our Venezuelan Kid Kart national champion moved up and
was soon the fastest on the track with our K80 package and pipe.
With our dyno we can tune to any kart rule book specifications and
give you the edge you need to win. K80 racing in the US is very
competitive with over 35 participants in many California races. Get
your engine from the most competitive area of the world and watch
just how fast it is compared to what you are running today.
Our K80 motors are
highly machined to rules stated in the various technical inspection
rulebooks. They are an investment because they are hard to find and
time consuming to test, but because they are gifted and set up
correctly you are passing people on the track legally. There is much
satisfaction in a win where you pass everyone and get checked
thoroughly in tech. When you are declared the winner in tech and
everyone walks away scratching their heads that's very satisfying
because you and your driver did it within the rules.
Special Notes:
K80 Tests
A new
client brought in a few K80's built by a top builder in the West.
People believe that they are the best builder of K80's right now. We
had three of our own engines to compare with the two. Each of our
three levels were better than the other builders K80 on the dyno.
While one had a peek HP that was .1hp in the 11000 band it was a
momentary peek. Our engines had a much flatter curve and held the
power advantage from 7,000 rpm to 12,500 rpm across the board. While
this is not a systematic test of all engines in the marketplace it
is confirmation that we build some of the best K80's on the market
today. Some builders sell off their lesser engines to people in
other markets, we just retire these engines or sell them as practice
engines. Our best engines are just that, the best heads and parts,
proven on the dyno.
*
The K80 Falcon

This is
our entry level race motor. Great for club racing and even some
regional races. Built from a fresh K80 and to the specifications in
the IKF, Stars and WKA rulebooks. These engines are great for
getting started and many are capable of winning bigger races. They
are not selected just built from a new engine out of the box. The
next two engines are selected for characteristics of the heads and
performance on the dyno.
* T he
K80 Hornet
If you
have been stung one to many times by the competition and would like
to fly to the front of the pack the Hornet may be your engine. This
engine could be a used engine or a new one. The motor is taken
apart and checked, then rebuilt with the best existing parts and
configured to exacting specifications. Then checked on the dyno and
broken in for easy introduction into the practice schedule.
* The
Stealth
This
engine will sneak up on the competition and drive by before they
knew what hit them. These motors are hard to find select head
castings that simply perform superior to other motors. Hand selected
and carefully reconfigured to perform at the top of the regional
races and national events.
* The
K80 Super Stealth
This is
the engine with all the treatments we can add legally, the attention
to detail on each part and a selective head, case, flywheel, carb
process that yields a much superior race engine. Gifted to begin
with the ports are shaped the way we want them, the carb is built
with the latest modifications for a nice carry through on throttle
response. Advanced tuning is done on the finest low hp engine dyno
in the business. We simply keep taking the engine back to the dyno
until it is finely tuned for each part and has maximum torque and
hp. Give us your chassis info, your home track specs and driver
specs and we'll build you a super engine that will surprise your
competitors.

Some
people have asked for a guarantee that they will pass tech. This is
impossible to do for several reasons. First we can't guarantee that
someone else doesn't modify the engine after it leaves here. We once
had a customer take one of our engines and lap other engines we
produced. That same customer was later DQ'd for head work. It is
hard to see how one of our engines could lap other engines we
produced. The other reason is that parts break and can cause a DQ.
Tech directors can also make mistakes.
The best
thing to do is to ask for your engine or component to be held in
tech if you receive a DQ. Ask for it to be sent up the ladder of IKF
or WKA. Often local tech directors can read a discoloration in a
port as port work when they just haven't seen enough of them to
know. To our knowledge we have only had two engines DQ'd in four
years. The first was one my son was racing. It was over a missing
component in the air filter. We proved that certain older engines
never had that piece installed in the following weeks and the the DQ
was in error. The other is the one we mentioned earlier. There are
very few things as painful as receiving a DQ in a big race. We do
everything on our end to make sure it doesn't happen. In the end it
will always be your responsibility to assure that your engine passes
tech. The best way to do this is to ask a tech director to look at
your engine prior to a race - most are willing to do this happily
and they are not very busy before racing begins.

with any questions. We have a few motors ready in advance some times
but many times you'll need to order and give us a few weeks to get
everything ready, tested and shipped.
Shipping and handling are $20 plus $8
for insurance. Overnight
shipping is usually $90 via UPS and $58 via US Mail (not
guaranteed).
Race
engines do not have warranties. We test and run each engine before
it ships. Once it leaves our facility it is your engine and can't be
returned for a refund. Well meaning people can and do forget to put
oil in gas, drop engines or run them with the wrong plugs. Even if
the engine has a problem after the first day it can't be returned
because there is no guarantee or warranty on race engines. No engine
can be guaranteed to pass tech, because they can break, be modified
once they leave our shop or be read incorrectly by a tech director.
This is standard in the industry. We know they are in good shape
when they leave here because they are tested. The engines can take a
while to find and build. We ship when they are done - once ordered
you can't get a refund. Please make sure you are prepared to accept
these conditions before you purchase. For many individuals this is
their first motor sports performance purchase.
